Formed: In 1853 from DeKalb County. In 1932, Milton and Campbell counties were consolidated with Fulton County, resulting in Fulton's current elongated shape. Named for: Robert Fulton, some believe. He designed the first commercially successful U.S. steamboat, which would revolutionize river travel and play a role in the development of the South. Population: 825,431, tops list of 159 counties in Georgia. (2002 Census Bureau estimate). Area: 535 square miles (21st of 159 counties). Top employers (nongovernmental; listed alphabetically): Cox Enterprises Sales tax: 7 percent. County millage: 36.296. Municipalities: Atlanta, Alpharetta, Mountain Park, Roswell, College Park, East Point, Fairburn, Hapeville, Palmetto and Union City. Did you know? Fulton is the 55th largest county in the United States by population. Atlanta is the 40th largest city, just behind San Juan, Puerto Rico, and just ahead of Sacramento, Calif. Campbell County, now south Fulton, existed for 103 years before consolidating with Fulton County. Milton County, now north Fulton, existed for 74 years.
