Among the state laws regarding home schooling:

Students must file a declaration of intent with their local school district.

Parents or guardians must have at least a high school diploma or GED if they plan to teach. Tutors other than parents or guardians must have at least a college degree.

The home-study program must include instruction in reading, language arts, math, social studies and science.

The school year must include the equivalent of 180 days of at least 4 1/2 hours of instruction per day unless the child is physically unable to comply.

Home-schooled students must take nationally standardized tests at least every three years beginning at the end of third grade.
