UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA BULLDOGS

In Athens, 80 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, the state's largest university features an athletics program that offered contenders for national championships in a number of sports in 2002-03. The gymnastics team, known as the Gym Dogs, performs before sellout crowds at Stegeman Coliseum, which also serves as home for the basketball teams. The football team, under second-year coach Mark Richt, won the SEC championship last season and finished third in the nation. The Bulldogs play their home games at Sanford Stadium, the largest on-campus facility in the state.

GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS

The 2002 football season, the first under head coach Chan Gailey, was marred by injuries to key players as the season wore on, and the Yellow Jackets finished a disappointing 7-6, 4-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (fifth place). The football team plays its games near downtown Atlanta at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The men's basketball team, dominated by freshmen and sophomores, nevertheless made it to the third round of the National Invitation Tournament before losing to Bobby Knight's Texas Tech Red Raiders.

GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY PANTHERS

Lefty Driesell, one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history, resigned as men's basketball coach early last season and was replaced by assistant Michael Perry. Under Perry, the short-handed Panthers were 10-9 and advanced to the semifinal round of the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament. Perry subsequently was signed to a three-year contract. The women's program, coached by former Olympian Lea Henry, made the women's NCAA tournament last season, losing in the first round to Duke.

CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY PANTHERS

One of six schools in the Atlanta University Center, Clark plays its second season under head football coach Tracy Ham, an All-America quarterback at Georgia Southern. Clark plays its home games at CAU Stadium, a facility built for the 1996 Olympics. The school also has a rich basketball tradition in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

MOREHOUSE COLLEGE MAROON TIGERS

The Maroon Tigers (also part of Atlanta University Center) will play at B.T. Harvey Stadium this year under second-year head coach Will Scissum. The basketball team plays at an 8,000-seat arena constructed for the Olympics, and Olympic champion Edwin Moses heads the list of athletes who have competed in the school's strong track program.
