Formed: In 1818 from lands obtained through the treaty with the Creek and Cherokee Indians.
Named for: Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia's three signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Population: 650,771, fourth of 159 counties in Georgia (2002 Census Bureau estimate).
Area: 437 square miles (50th of 159 counties in Georgia).
