Country cooking mixes with political gossip at this Jonesboro institution. Opened in a trailer in 1963, through the years Butch's has become a gathering place for local politicians. The restaurant also has become a must stop for office-seekers in the county, politicians say. But it is the home-cooked food, especially the chicken dishes, that made the restaurant a favorite spot of Clayton residents for decades. Many patrons are longtime customers who have been coming to the restaurant since it opened.

The Calvin Center, owned by the Presbyterian church, is a nonprofit conference center and campground in the panhandle of Clayton County. It is noted for its recreational therapeutic horse riding for disabled children and adults. The 548-acre facility offers summer horse camps and trail rides that stretch into Henry and Fayette counties.

Noah's Ark Rehabilitation Center Inc. offers a refuge to abused, injured and orphaned animals. The facility includes natural habitats, a rehabilitation facility/clinic, welcome center and nature trails, which are open to the public at no charge. The center also includes a Residential Group Home, which houses children ages 6-17. The mission of Noah's Ark is "bringing children and animals together for the purpose of providing unconditional love, unconditional service, and a future full of hope," according to its Web site, www.noahs-ark.org.

This Henry County park was created to protect a 100-acre granite monadnock (mountain) often compared to Stone Mountain. Visitors may enjoy rare plants of the Piedmont, explore the park's watershed and granite outcrop on their own, or they may take a guided hike. The interpretive center offers live exhibits, including bees, bats, snakes and turtles. Pets and bicycles are not allowed on trails.
Peachtree Peddler's Flea Market

Peachtree Peddler's Flea Market is a 200,000-square-foot enclosed, air-conditioned mall with a variety of indoor and outdoor vendors. The facility, just off I-75, is open weekends year round and includes a Showcase Events Center, which accommodates up to 2,500 people, and the Peachtree Antique Center, which opens daily. The flea market flies a huge American flag that can be seen off the interstate and is a local landmark for area residents.

The Pinehurst Tea Room brings elegance to the country. The restaurant is in an 1800s country Victorian house that has been transformed into an English tearoom complete with period antiques, crystal chandeliers, Oriental rugs, flowers and lace curtains. The restaurant offers not only tea and lighter fare such as chicken and fruit salads, but also more substantial dishes, including Maryland crab cakes, pasta dishes, mushroom puffs, pot pies, soups and hearty sandwiches, plus desserts.
Reynolds Nature Preserve

The preserve is composed of 146 acres of forests, lakes, ponds and streams, and includes at least three miles of walking trails. Along these paths, visitors can see many native Georgia plants and animals as well as examples of ecological succession by which a pond eventually becomes a forest. Visitors also can request a guided tour. Admission is free.
