License Plates

Georgia tags must be purchased within 30 days after establishing residency. You will need the following:

1. Georgia driver's license;

2. Title of car, name and address of lienholder, or copy of lease agreement (Title is required for 1986 or newer vehicles);

3. Current tag registration;

4. Mileage reading of vehicle;

5. Valid insurance card. Liability coverage insurance is required by Georgia law and an insurance identification card must be in your possession when you drive;

6. Proof of Georgia Residency (such as a lease or deed);

7. $20 for your tag plus $18 for your title (if required). Drivers may also have to pay an ad valorem tax (property tax) at the time the license tag is issued;

Emissions Certificate

Vehicle emission inspections are now required every year for covered counties.* All models from 1979-2000 (even AND odd model years) require emissions testing. Vehicles include gasoline-powered cars or light trucks up to 8,500 lbs. gross vehicle weight.

Change in Vehicle Exemptions:
The 3 most recent model years are exempt each year. In 2003, all 2001 and newer model year vehicles are exempt from emission testing. Additionally, vehicles 25 model years or older are now exempt. In 2003, this includes vehicles 1978 or older.
