Lookout Mountain mansion to be auctioned

CHATTANOOGA — A century-old mansion known as Giles House is coming up for auction, with its current owner hoping a buyer will restore it into a single-family residence.
The Chattanoga Times-Free Press reports the three-story stone house with an adjacent carriage house was named for its original owner, 19th century indusrialist David Giles.
Giles moved to Chattanooga in 1887 and established U.S. Cast Iron Pipe and Foundry Co., which operated until 2006.
He built the 7,052-square-foot home on Lookout Mountain in 1906, where it was one of the first permanent structures in an area known for summer vacation homes.
The home has been leased for apartments for nearly 60 years. Owner Mike McGauley, whose ancestors bought it in the 1940s, plans to auction it to the highest bidder on July 23.
