Metro Atlanta construction projects get green light

Bond package OK’d by lawmakers means building money for schools, colleges, others

The hard-hit construction industry ought to be getting a boost in the coming fiscal year from a $1.2 billion bond package state lawmakers approved last week.

Metro Atlanta will get more than $200 million in projects from the bond package, not including a big share of $300 million approved for local school construction.

The bonds for the projects won’t be sold for several months, but they will eventually mean new college buildings, libraries and other facilities.

Besides the K-12 school construction, below are some of the projects of local interest in the budget:

Fulton County:

• $43 million for construction of an Undergraduate Learning Commons at Georgia Tech.

• $9.6 million for an outdoor student recreation facility in downtown at Georgia State University.

• $8 million to complete the Parker H. Petit Science Center at Georgia State University.

• $2.5 million to design and construct an addition to a science building at Atlanta Metropolitan College.

• $1 million in equipment for Georgia Perimeter College’s Alpharetta Academic Facility.

• $3.2 million to replace roofs at the Georgia World Congress Center.

• $2.73 million to design a new state judicial building.

• $6.4 million to renovate two downtown state buildings.

Cherokee County:

• $1 million for renovation of the R.T. Jones Memorial Library in Canton.

• $2 million to design and build the Northeast Regional Library in unincorporated Cherokee County.

Clayton County:

• $2 million for the Forest Park branch library.

• $2.1 million for design of a new science building at Clayton State University.

Cobb County:

• $19 million for laboratory addition to the science building at Kennesaw State.

• $3.7 million for equipment for the Engineering Technology Center at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta.

DeKalb County:

• $2 million for the DeKalb County Central Library and Processing Center.

• $2.2 million for design of an academic building at Georgia Perimeter College’s Dunwoody campus.

Gwinnett County:

• $2 million for infrastructure and utility improvements at Georgia Gwinnett College.

Hall County:

• $31.2 million for construction of an academic facility at Gainesville State College.

• $13.6 million to replace the Oakwood Diagnostic Laboratory Facility, Georgia Poultry Improvement Association in Hall County.

• $14 million to design and construct Don Carter State Park in Gainesville.

Others:

• $15.3 million for express buses and two new park-and-ride lots for the state’s express bus service.

• $26.6 million for a special collections library at UGA.

• $5.97 million to design, construct and equip a new central utility plant at the University of Georgia.
