Soldier, 19, found dead at Fort Stewart identified

FORT STEWART — A soldier found dead at Fort Stewart has been identified as an Illinois native assigned to the Army post’s 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment.

Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said Thursday the Army is still investigating the death of 19-year-old Pvt. Michael A. Bloomquist of Momence, Ill. Bloomquist, who served on active duty, was found dead Saturday night in his barracks.

The soldier’s death was the second on the Army post this month.

Spc. William Smith, 27, of the Georgia National Guard was found dead in his barracks on Jan. 9. Larson says autopsy results on Smith’s death are not available, but the two deaths appear to be unrelated.
