GOP lawmaker weighing strip club fee

Associated Press

Monday, January 05, 2009

A Republican state lawmaker is considering legislation that would impose a fee on Georgia strip club patrons.

State Sen. Jack Murphy of Cumming says he’d like to see the state charge between $3 and $5 for every club goer. Murphy said Monday he would like to funnel the money to child abuse programs and other services for young people who are caught up in child prostitution or other forms of sexual exploitation.

Some of those services have been cut this year as Georgia has slashed its budget amid falling revenues.

About $500,000 in state funding was cut for the Georgia Regional Assessment, a therapy center for former child prostitutes.

this is a stupid idea, Murphy is in Cumming where there are no strip clubs to buy him out. what about porn videos? are they gonna put a tax on every videos you rent too? that's stupid.
That's the one thing i have about Republicans, they preach about righteousness and yet many times, they don't practice what they preach. Stupid idea.

I find it offensive that legislators take on a sanctimonious attitude and punish those they personally deem immoral. Whether or not skin is on display, immoral behavior is a factor anywhere that adults gather to have a good time. Be it the neighborhood bar, local night club, sporting event or a strip club. It's disturbing that the proposed tax would be distributed to programs for child abuse, child prostitution and other sex related crimes. Is the Senator implying that everyone that steps into a strip club is a potential sex criminal? Since when does seeing a great pair of tts make you more prone to commiting a sexual assault? Everyone who works in this particular industry is already obligated to pay $200 to $300 annually for a permit and that is not just a fee for the entertainers, it includes anyone who works there, from the bartenders and management to the cook. Where does hundreds of thousands of dollars collected from these permits get redistributed to? Where will this laughable(at best) proposal lead...Rapist admits he felt the urge to commit rape because he saw a cover of a porn magazine "discreetly" displayed at the corner gas station...do we then tax the gas stations patrons because they may also be overcome by the urge to commit a sexually related crime? How far down the rabbit hole does this issue go?

When faced with the need to raise taxes, it is so easy to go after the poor or to tax excess like Tobacco, Alcohol, or...strip clubs. If you want to make change for rape victims, try spending the money for rape prevention, not counseling. We so often spend money on fixing problems instead of preventing them. If you take a part of the cover charge for entry, that makes you as bad as the strip club owner who is taking the rest of the profits from the door.

All this tax does is express Jack's belief that the folks that visit strip clubs are the same folks that end up raping and exploiting children and sex workers. If you want to make a difference in the woman's lives who work at these places, provide them some measure of state health care (beyond HIV testing) and give them some options with job rehabilitation programs or education possibilities.

Preventing problems, not repairing them.

This is a waste of time and money. Tax payer money will be pissed away in courts for the next ten years trying to enforce this unconstitutional law to collect a tax which violates the first amendment. Texas has already lost why copy a losing plan???

You want something thats legal fine stop concentrating on one type of bar, go after all of them and tax every person who enters a bar $1.00. Now see how much resistence you get.

Good Luck!!!

Tell Bubba and his buddies to leave the foot models alone.

Enough of your foolish ideas.

How about a paycut for all government employees making more than $75k until the budget is balanced.

Touch the foot models and Jawja will definitely turn to a blue state.

Where do you expect patrick Ewing to go now to get a *******?

You have no idea how many marriages have been saved by foot models.

They are the best.

Without these establishments Atlanta would just be another Shthole.

Do you really think people visit Atlanta to visit Turner Field and the World of KO?

Get a life.

The Government is clearly the enemy.

Politicians clearly never received any play which is why they get aroused by verbal jousting.

get a life fat boy.
