High winds disrupt electric service to 3,000

After a blustery Sunday that saw as many as roughly 3,000 Georgia Power customers without electricity, power was restored to everyone by early evening, a spokeswoman for the utility said.
Strong winds had pushed trees onto power lines early Sunday, knocking out electricity to thousands of customers. The lights were back on for everyone by 6 p.m., utility spokeswoman Lynn Wallace said.
Calls began coming in before 5 a.m., Wallace said. The utility had the outages down to about 500 by 7 a.m., but the winds pushed them back up to 1,900 two hours later.
Because it’s Sunday, Wallace said it took the company a while to get all of its crews in.
The first round of outages hit mostly downtown Atlanta and Decatur. By mid-morning, customers were reporting outages across the region, with the exception of the south metro counties. There were 42 events “pretty much scattered around the metro area,” Wallace said.
