Gwinnett County is inching toward becoming the fifth metro Atlanta county that is majority-minority.

Four metro counties already have reached the majority-minority milestone, meaning the majority of residents in that county are minorities. Fulton, Dekalb, Clayton and Rockdale counties have more minority residents combined than white residents, census data show. Gwinnett's population is now 48.3 percent minority, up from 10 percent in 1990.

The U.S. Census Bureau released county-level data Aug. 7 for the nation showing race, ethnicity and age, based on estimates from July 1, 2007.

Nationally, nearly one out of every 10 counties is majority-minority. Examples include Miami-Dade County, Queens in New York and Los Angeles County. In Georgia, Clayton has the highest percentage of minority residents, at 79 percent. • Read more
