The National Weather Service is calling for an afternoon high near 95 and heat index values as high as 99. The service also forecasts scattered thunderstorms and isolated severe storms in parts of north Georgia, prompting a Hazardous Weather Outlook for north and central Georgia.
The chance of rain, 20 percent in the afternoon, will dissipate after sunset, meteorologist Sean Ryan said.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Environmental Protection Division has issued a code orange air quality alert for Atlanta. The air is likely to be unhealthy for children and people who are sensitive to ozone. People with heart or lung disease "should limit prolonged outdoor exertion during the late afternoon or early evening," according to the DNR Web site.
Temperatures are expected to cool, relatively speaking, closer to the weekend. Daily highs are 92 for Thursday, 84 for Friday and 87 for Saturday and Sunday.
