Incumbents face serious challenges Tuesday

Dozens of state lawmakers, from some of House Speaker Glenn Richardson's committee chairmen to a floor leader for Gov. Sonny Perdue, face primary tests Tuesday.

Here are a few races to watch on primary day:

Senate District 17 (Newton and parts of Henry, Rockdale, Spalding and Walton counties), Republican primary, Sen. John Douglas of Social Circle vs. former Republican state Sen. Mike Crotts

A sometimes nasty contest between the conservative chairman of the Georgia Senate's Veterans Affairs Committee and the man he replaced in office. Crotts served in the Senate for more than a decade before running unsuccessfully for Congress. He might be best known as the prime sponsor of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Douglas has been a strong proponent of legislation aimed at slowing the flow of illegal immigrants.

Senate District 44 (Part of Clayton and Henry counties), Democratic primary, Sen. Gail Davenport of Jonesboro vs. former state Rep. Gail Buckner of Morrow; Demont Davis, an IT consultant from Morrow; and Jonesboro real estate broker Artansa Snell

Davenport is a freshman seeking re-election and facing a crowded primary. Buckner is the best-known of her opponents, having served the area in the state House for years. She ran unsuccessfully for secretary of state in 2006. This one could wind up in a runoff.

Senate District 46 (Oconee and parts of Clarke and Walton counties), Republican primary, Sen. Bill Cowsert of Athens vs. Watkinsville teacher Tommy Malcom

Cowsert is a freshman lawmaker with big backing from the Senate Republican leadership. He was recently appointed a floor leader for Perdue. Malcom, who was elected to the Oconee County Board of Education at age 22, has raised little money. Cowsert has raised about 10 times more money than Malcom. All the advantages point to Cowsert.

Senate District 50 (far North Georgia, from Rabun Gap to Lake Hartwell), Republican primary, Sen. Nancy Schaefer of Turnerville vs. Habersham County Commissioner Jim Butterworth and Clarkesville businessman Terry Rogers

This race in the stomping ground of former Gov. Zell Miller is unusual because it involves a fairly well-known Republican incumbent (Schaefer ran unsuccessfully for governor and lieutenant governor in the 1990s) against two GOP opponents. Schaefer didn't help her cause by first announcing plans to run for Congress, then withdrawing. A few days after withdrawing from the congressional race, she announced she would run for re-election. Schaefer may have been seen as vulnerable since she only won re-election by a few thousand votes in 2006.

House District 9 (parts of Dawson, Forsyth and Lumpkin counties), Republican primary, Rep. Amos Amerson of Dahlonega vs. Dahlonega businessman Steve Gooch

A race between one of Richardson's committee chairmen (Amerson) and Gooch, a friend of Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle's, this one was bound to be a hard-hitting affair. It's been seen as an example of how the Richardson-Cagle political feud is bleeding into the GOP primaries. Both leaders have raised money for their candidates. Amerson has repeated Richardson's assertion that Georgians should get rid of Cagle, while Gooch has dubbed Amerson a Richardson pawn.

House District 15 (Part of Bartow County), Republican primary, Rep. Jeff Lewis of White vs. Paul Battles, a retired banker from Cartersville

This is another race where Richardson plays an indirect role. The speaker appointed Lewis chairman of the Energy, Utilities and Telecommunications Committee, so he is part of the House leadership. Battles has said he wouldn't vote to re-elect Richardson to another term as speaker.

House District 22 (Part of Cherokee County), Republican primary, Rep. Sean Jerguson of Canton vs. Canton consultant Mary Elizabeth Wilhite

Jerguson is a freshman lawmaker who narrowly beat Wilhite in a runoff in 2006. Once again Richardson is an issue, but this time it's one of his ideas that's being debated: the GREAT plan that would have eliminated property taxes in exchange for charging sales taxes on more goods and services. Jerguson was a strong supporter of the plan; Wilhite thought it was a bad idea.

House District 53 (Part of Fulton County), Democratic primary, former state Rep. Pamela Stanley of Atlanta vs. attorney/homemaker Elly Dobbs

There has been a Stanley in the state House since the 1980s. Pamela Stanley is a former state House member who is trying to make a comeback in a district long represented by her sister, LaNett. At one time they served together in the House from different districts. Pamela Stanley recently signed a proposed Ethics Commission consent decree agreeing to pay back nearly $40,000 in campaign donations she couldn't account for spending on her campaign. Under the order, she will also be fined $26,250. Dobbs points to Stanley's problems with the Ethics Commission, as well as LaNett Stanley's record of missing votes, to argue that the northwest Atlanta district needs change.

House District 65 (Part of south Fulton County), Democratic primary, Rep. Sharon Beasley-Teague of Red Oak vs. Sandra Hardy of Fairburn, Lewanna Heard of East Point, Woody Holmes of Fairburn and Charles Sharper of Atlanta

Beasley-Teague has served 15 relatively quiet years in the state House, but this year she made the news when the state Ethics Commission began investigating whether she misused campaign money. She also collected more than $2,300 in mileage from the state last year contending she took lengthy treks across Georgia. In one case she claimed mileage for driving 889 miles in one day — from Fairburn to Albany to Waycross to Savannah to Athens to Dillard and back to Fairburn. With five people in the race, this one is probably headed to a runoff.
