The Supreme Court's 5-4 ruling on Thursday stated for the first time that Americans have a right to own guns for hunting or self-defense.

The ruling specifically revoked only the District of Columbia's ban on handguns. But most states have gun laws in place that restrict guns and their use, or allow guns to be legally used in specific situations.
