In its 85th year, the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers' awards program recognizes outstanding achievement in a wide range of media, from writing and photography to drawing and ceramics. Out of more than 100,000 entries nationwide, about 1,100 were chosen as national winners.

Bailey and his parents, Martha and Mark, are in New York for Friday night's award ceremony, where Danny Bailey will walk across the stage at famed Carnegie Hall.

Bailey won for a charcoal drawing he did for his portfolio in an advanced placement class at Collins Hill High School in Gwinnett County.

Bailey, who recently graduated and plans to attend Georgia State University, was sheepish about the award.

"I drew a pair of shoes," Bailey said, while riding a New Jersey Transit train from Penn Station to their hotel near the Meadlowlands in Brunswick, N.J.

The drawing was of his own Converse sneakers. While sitting with his feet together, Bailey took a photograph of his shoes and drew them with charcoal. His teacher, Karen Campbell, saw it in his portfolio and entered it in the state-level competition. He won, and then won again. And now he's in New York.

His mother, however, said her son doesn't give himself enough credit.

"You can tell the texture and the rubber [of the shoes]," said Martha, a physical therapist. "He's so precise."
