Former teacher posts bond after sexual assault charge

A former Paulding County high school teacher was freed on bond Wednesday after being charged with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old female student, police said.

Darrel Johnson, 37-year-old social studies teacher at Hiram High School, was arrested Tuesday and posted $2,850 in bond Wednesday afternoon, said Cpl. Brandon Gurley, a sheriff's department spokesman.

Sheriff's Sgt. Brent Miller described the alleged assault as "inappropriate sexual contact." Gurley said "some of the actions" may have occurred on school grounds.

Johnson of Dallas had taught at the school since 2003 and resigned before his arrest, schools spokeswoman Sharon Roper said.
