A memorial service for Hamilton Jordan, White House chief of staff during the Carter administration, will be held with family and close friends at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 23, at The Carter Center. Seating begins at 1 p.m. President Carter as well as other friends and colleagues over the years, will offer remarks and reminiscences. The event will not be open to press coverage.

The following statements were issued today by the Jordan Family, his doctor, and Camp Sunshine.

The Jordan Family issued the following statement today:

The Jordan Family greatly appreciates the overwhelming amount of love and support we have received from our friends during the many difficult years of Hamilton's illness. We are saddened beyond words at his death, but we are also at peace knowing that he is finally comfortable after years of fighting an incurable disease. A truly unforgettable person, Hamilton will be remembered as a compassionate, brilliant, and selfless human being who touched so many lives with his limitless generosity.

Statement from Dr. Ellen Frauenthal

Hamilton Jordan died after a long and courageous battle with mesothelioma. Hamilton was aggressively treated both locally and globally by the world's leading mesothelioma experts, including Richard Alexander, M.D., surgical oncologist at the University of Maryland-Baltimore. While Hamilton's mesothelioma was controlled, the effects of the disease and its treatments ultimately resulted in his death. For the past two years, his approach to his last of many cancers was met with his well-known resilient spirit and strategic optimism which provided inspiration to all those involved with his medical care.

Camp Sunshine Statement:

Camp Sunshine, programs for children with cancer, is deeply saddened at the loss of Hamilton Jordan, who died on Tuesday, May 20, 2008. Hamilton was integral in the development of Camp Sunshine with his wife, Dorothy (Camp Sunshine's Founder), and continued to sit on the Board of Directors. His Legacy not only impacted thousands of children with cancer throughout the state of Georgia but also the entire cancer community worldwide. He was a vital part of several organizations, foundations, and the community and will be greatly missed by everyone in the Camp Sunshine family.
