For those affected by the March 14 tornado who have put off either filing their taxes or applying for federal aid, Monday is the deadline for both.
Metro Atlantans affected by the tornado have until the end of business Monday to apply for aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency or the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Monday is also the last day of grace that the Internal Revenue Service extended to citizens of Fulton and DeKalb counties to file their income taxes.
With the declaration of Fulton and DeKalb counties a federal disaster area — in addition to Bartow, Burke, Floyd, Jefferson and Polk counties —residents in those counties became eligible to apply for grants and loans from the federal government.
FEMA grants are available to cover uninsured or underinsured losses and other costs related to the storm. Claims can be made for damaged homes, property, emergency housing, lost business, unemployment and medical costs, among other things.
The U.S. SBA offers low-cost loans to homeowners, renters and business owners for physical and economic losses caused by the storms.
Residents seeking FEMA grants can apply at www.fema.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362 or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY).
SBA applications are available at www.sba.gov or through 1-800-659-2955 or 1-800-877-8339 (TTY).
Those filing their taxes late are advised to write "Georgia Severe Storms and Tornadoes" at the top of their return. For more information, taxpayers can call 1-866-562-5227 or go to www.irs.gov.
