Feds: No guns allowed at Allatoona, Lanier
Change in Georgia law does not apply to federal lakes and parks

Leave your guns at home, says the federal agency that operates parks around lakes Lanier, Allatoona, Hartwell and other reservoirs.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Thursday issued a brief statement to clarify that Georgia's new gun law does not apply to their lakes and lands.

New law allows guns in parks, restaurants

The law, signed Wednesday by Gov. Sonny Perdue, allows Georgians with the proper license to bring concealed guns in state and local parks, restaurants that serve alcohol and on public transportation.

"This clarification was prompted by several inquiries received by the Corps concerning the law and media reports about the law's application to parks," Corps spokesman E. Patrick Robbins said.

Under federal regulations, the only guns allowed on Corps-owned property are those carried by local, state and federal law enforcement officers, or hunters who are in compliance with hunting regulations.

It has never been legal to bring state licensed firearms (except for sworn police officers) onto Federal Installations. This information is just a clarification of the new law.
I am a Federal employee and I know I have to leave my firearm at home when I go to work.
The new law will allow law abiding citizens to protect themselves (and hopefully liberals) from harm when unlicensed wannabe idiots who could care less that they don't qualify for a gun permit bring their weapons along to rob and kill innocent victims.

Thanks, Army Corps of engineers, for showing some sanity and common sense and a big "Thumbs Down" to the State legislature and to Governor Perdue: you expanded the rights of idiots to carry guns anywhere and endangert hose of us who have never owned, much less carried a gun. Am married to a Viet Nam veteran of the Infantry who never needed a gun to attest to his manliness or his self-worth, unlike many who have posted here.

We are becoming a nation of cowards, ready to give away our rights under the pretence of safety. And since when did the Federal government dictate to the state. Federally owned land in a state? The federal government derives its power from the State, not the other way around. I for one, having lived in Los Angeles for the last few years, will be happy to return to a state where good sense is beginning to prevail of ignorance and cowardice.

This special message brought to you by the boys who can't even read there own gauge at Lake Lanier.

I own property next to the corps. I have met the representatives that work at the corp. They are power hungry morons given the right of absolution and immunity by Congress - the largest offender of them all. It is truly a tragic and sad state of affairs.

Shows the good sense of the Army, where they know what guns are for (killing) and what danger comes with inadequate gun regulation. Count me as one who will immediately leave any bar or restaurant where I see firearms in the possession of anyone but an officer of the law or a uniformed member of the military. The gun nuts say they need their weapons with them for self defense, but I never want to be caught in the crossfire between gun-wielding criminals and a gun-carrying civilian whose competence I know nothing about. My odds are much better with the crooks!

I think I'll take my chances in the parks rather than in a bar with a bunch of drunk armed "law-abiding" citizens.

ab - Gary Michael Hilton didn't care whether there was a prohibitive law or not. Didn't stop him. Now maybe if his victim had a gun of her own...-but no, she was a law abiding citizen.

Listen to JackP. Contact your Rep. and ask them to go beyond the proposed rule changes to allow firearms in federal parks and land, and make it law. It actually supports states rights as well as the system of federalism by allowing the state regulation to prevail on federal land that is within that state. Therefore, in a state like Georgia where you can carry in a state park, you will be able to carry in a federal park as well. The proposed rule changes are likely to go into effect at the end of June (conspicuously left out of the AJC column...hmmm...), but legislation is needed to make it permanent. Ask your Rep. to support HR 5646.
