Tuition hike approved for state colleges, universities

Incoming freshmen at the state's colleges and universities will pay 5 percent to 8 percent more than last year's freshmen class, under a tuition increase approved Tuesday by the Board of Regents.
Rates will remain constant for these students through fall 2011.

- University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and Medical College of Georgia: $2,428 per semester, 8 percent more
- Georgia Southern University, Kennesaw State University, the University of West Georgia, and Valdosta State University: $1,598 per semester, 8 percent.
- Georgia College & State University: $2,273 per semester, 8 percent
- Southern Polytechnic State University: $1,751 per semester, 8 percent
- Other four year universities: $1,549 per semester, up $115, or 8 percent.
- State colleges: $997 per semester, up $59 or 6 percent
- Two year colleges: $919 per semester up $44, or 5 percent
Here is 2008 tuition for upper classmen at research universities:
- Students who enrolled before 2006, $2,167 per semester, 6 percent more.
- Sophomores and juniors, locked in with guaranteed tuition rates under the university system's "Fixed for Four" program, won't pay increases.
