More than 300 Georgians have signed up to be Barack Obama delegates to the Democratic National Convention in August and 260 are likely to be disappointed.

In Atlanta-based District 5, 85 Democrats are competing for just five seats at the convention in Denver.

Conventions coverage

Georgia Democrats will gather in caucuses in each of the state's 13 congressional districts Saturday to choose delegates to the national convention. Although 301 Democrats want to be Obama delegates, only 40 will get the privilege of paying more than $3,000 of their own money to go to the convention.

Competition will not be quite as stiff on Hillary Clinton's side of Saturday's vote, as 53 Georgians signed up to campaign for a total of 17 Clinton delegates.

Some would-be delegates might already have been disappointed. The Obama and Clinton campaigns were allowed to comb through the list of people who wanted to be delegates and strike any name they wish. If a name was culled, the campaign had to offer up three acceptable replacements.

Georgia Democratic Party spokesman Martin Matheny would not say whether either campaign exercised that right of refusal and referred the question to the campaigns. Neither campaign could immediately say Monday whether it challenged any potential delegates.

The delegates will be elected in caucus-style meetings across the state Saturday. Each candidate was awarded a certain number of delegates based on the district-level results of the state's Feb. 5 presidential primary. In each district, however, the number of delegates is divided between men and women based on a formula designed to create parity between genders.

There are 160 women running for 21 slots in Obama's camp and 139 men running for 19 spots. The interest in being an Obama delegate is so great, in fact, that four men signed up in District 9, even though Obama gets only 1 delegate from the district and it must be a woman.

Dwanda Farmer of Atlanta is one of 45 women running for three female slots allocated to Obama from District 5.

"Those are not great odds," Farmer said but added that the interest shows the enthusiasm for the candidate.

"You've got 85 people looking for five seats," she said. "That is a testament to how strongly people feel about Obama and just a determination that we're going to see him in the presidency. For me, that's what it is."
