House revives bill allowing Sunday alcohol sales
House Committee unanimously passed law allowing Sunday beer sales at Gwinnett's baseball stadium, tack on legislation for Sunday alcohol sales

The bill to allow package sales of alcohol on Sundays in Georgia was revived Wednesday afternoon when it was attached to Senate legislation allowing Sunday beer sales at Gwinnett County's new baseball stadium.

More about this year's Legislature

The amended bill passed the House Regulated Industries Committee unanimously, despite opposition from preachers, who told lawmakers that more alcohol would mean more social problems.

State Sen. Renee Unterman (R-Buford), the author of the Gwinnett stadium bill, urged the committee not to tack the Sunday sales measure onto her legislation. Unterman said Gov. Sonny Perdue has told her he would veto any legislation that would allow for local communities to vote on Sunday alcohol sales.

Last year, Perdue hinted at such a veto when the issue was first raised, and Senate leaders stalled the proposal.

However, Rep. Allen Freeman (R-Macon), a member of the House committee, said Unterman was being hypocritical by urging lawmakers to approve Sunday beer sales at the Gwinnett stadium but opposing Sunday sales at grocery and convenience stores across the state.

"You want me to support you, but you don't want to support me," Freeman said. "The hypocrisy of what you just said is unbelievable to me."

Under the measure, officials in local communities that already allow alcoholic beverage sales would be able to call for a referendum to decide if Sunday package sales in stores should be allowed.

The measure now probably heads to the House floor for a vote.

Folks, it's just a simple right. That's all. I could care less what religion you are, just keep it to yourself. The point is, alcohol is not against the law. We are simply asking for the right to vote. Denying us the right to vote is totally in violation of our constitutional rights, which is really the more important issue. If the majority wants something that is NOT ILLEGAL, we should have it. Period.

It is all about people forcing their personal religious beliefs onto everyone else via public policy.

And it is about as anti-liberty, anti-freedom and anti-American as you can get.

I feel sorry for Georgia

Sonny's true beliefs must be called to question. If he truly believes in his religion, how does he put himself in position of enforcing his will? Does he pretend to be the word of God? I believe Sonny is a true hypocrite.

Shut down churches on Sundays. Who do those clergymen think they are working on the holy day!

Perdue's argument only reinforces the weakness of religions in general. He doesn't want beer sold on sundays for the same reason Conservative Muslims and Ultraorthodox Jews garb their women in Burkhas: To eliminate the source of temptation.

This is particularly infuriating when you consider that he opposes Sunday sales on the basis that we should be responsible enough to buy our alcohol on saturdays. Well guess what Sonny, maybe you and your ilk should be responsible enough to just not go to the beer aisle on Sunday.

I say that we ban the sale of fast food on Sundays. I am sure that I could stock up my hamburgers on Saturday. That would definitely be good for the community as a whole. Then we can see how many people agree that this is a backwards law.

Okay. Let us insert some reasoning here. Unfortunately, the refusal of Sunday alcohol sales will continue keeping Saturday night alcohol sales elevated. As blasphemous as this statement is, I hope that when Jesus returns, if he visits our fair Gwinnett county that he chooses a day between Monday and Saturday. I would like to apologize now for my slightly offensive sense of humor. Let us all lighten up. Hopefully approving this sort of bill will not invite Georgia's alcoholics to reside in Gwinnett. Oops. There I go again.

I didn't read through all the pages of comments so sorry if this has been stated before.

Funny how the Gov. is fine with allowing a ballot measures based on on some controversial subjects (gay marriage), but not on others (sunday sales). He's fine with the gov. restricting rights as long as it fits his personal beliefs.

If your religion tells you not to drink on Sunday, don't do it. If your religion tells you not to marry someone of the same sex, don't do it.

Don't prevent people who don't believe as you are from doing things just because you don't believe it's right.

Laws need to limited to restricting things that cause physical, financial, and sometimes mental harm to others. Limiting something outside of that realm just because the majority (which could be just 51%) of the populace doesn't believe in doing it is wrong.
