Low-flow toilets now mean reduced bill

Metro Atlanta water planners are offering rebates for low-flow toilets, a deal that should conserve water and save homeowners some money.

THE DEAL: Owners or renters of pre-1993 houses who get a water bill from a participating utility are eligible for rebates for one or two low-flow toilets.

•$100 —Rebate for buying approved toilets using 1.28 gallons per flush.

• $50 —Rebate for approved toilets using 1.6 gallons per flush.

HOW IT WORKS: A list of approved toilets and a rebate application are available at www.northgeorgiawater.org, or by mail by calling 404-463-8645.

Mail the application, the original toilet purchase receipt, the model number and a copy of the most recent water bill to the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District and agree to an installation verification by water utility staff.

WHAT YOU CAN BUY: The Home Depot's Pegasus Cottage costs $99, before taxes, and qualifies for the $100 rebate. The retailer is also offering a discounted installation in metro Atlanta, for $59.

PARTICIPATING COMMUNITIES: The cities of Atlanta and Hapeville and the counties of Cherokee, Clayton, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett and Henry. Cobb and Dekalb counties have their own rebate programs.
