Move over pecans, peaches and peanuts —the Georgia blueberry may get its own state agency too.
Today the Georgia House voted 146 to 10 to create the Georgia Blueberry Commission, an agency to promote the tiny berries that go well with corn flakes and milk.

House members debated the issue for more than a half hour. Some lawmakers complained there are already too many agricultural commodity commissions in Georgia.
State Rep. Tommy Smith (R-Nichols), himself a blueberry farmer, countered that the agency is needed for a variety of reasons. One of them, he said, would be to counter the resale of blueberries shipped out of state back to Georgians.
Smith also noted that commission would be funded totally by contributions from blueberry farmers and not taxpayer funds.
"Fat's Domino got it right when he said 'I found my thrill on Blueberry Hill,'" said Smith, as he recounted the history of the cultivation and production of the fruit. "I hope you'll support this legislation and make Georgia the Blueberry Capital of the World:
There are currently a dozen commissions that promote vegetables, corn, pecans, canola, soybeans, cotton, apples, tobacco, peaches, sweet potatoes, peanuts and eggs.
