To get you ready for Georgia presidential primaries, here are some frequently asked questions:
Q: When do I vote?
|
A: From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m on Tuesday, Feb. 5. State law says that no one in line to vote at 7 p.m. will be kicked out. You'll get your turn. Historically, busiest times are from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., plus lunch.
Q: What national races are on the ballot?
A: Just one: Nomination of the parties for president.
Q: Are there any local votes?
A: There are bond and tax votes in Atlanta, Clayton County, Gwinnett County and Forsyth County. See this article for details.
Q: Can I vote in both the Democratic and Republican primaries?
A: Nope, you have to choose one or the other.
Q: Are there separate voting locations for Democrats and Republicans?
A: No, all the voting will be done at the same location, although there could be separate lines for each party or actual voting booths dedicated to one party or another.
Q: Where do I vote?
A: Your precinct card, also known as a voter registration card, gives the polling place for your home address. You also can find your poll location at the Secretary of State's Web site.
Q: What can I carry with me into the voting booth?
A: You can carry sample ballots, the name of your preferred candidate to help you remember his or her name, or a break down of issues. But you cannot carry campaign materials into the polling place, and you cannot share your information with other voters.
Q: What else do I need?
A: Photo identification. Remember the General Assembly adopted a voter ID plan last year requiring all voters to show valid photo identification at the polls. "Valid" identification includes:
— Any valid state or federal government issued photo ID, including the free Voter ID Card issued by your county registrar's office or the Georgia Department of Driver Services.
— A Georgia driver's license, even if expired.
— Valid employee photo ID from any branch, department, agency, or entity of the U.S. government, Georgia, or any county, municipality, board, authority or other entity of the state. This includes current photo ID from a public Georgia high school or college.
— Valid U.S. passport.
— Valid U.S. military photo ID.
— Valid tribal photo ID.
Q: Are there ways to vote without actually going to the polls on Election Day?
A: You can vote with an absentee ballot. You have to request an absentee ballot application from your county registrar's office. Absentee ballot applications can be found Web site. You can also vote absentee in person, but you'll have to give a reason why you need to vote absentee, such as you'll be away from your precinct from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day or are 75 or older. You'll also have to provide a photo ID if you cast your absentee ballot in person. You can vote absentee in person now through Election Day, although your ballot has to be received by your country registrar by 7 p.m. Election Day.
Q: Let's say I mess up and come to the polls on Tuesday and forget my photo ID. Can I still vote?
A: Yes, you'll be able to cast a provisional ballot, but you'll have to go back to your county registrar's office within two days and present one of the acceptable photo IDs for your vote to actually count.
Q: Who is on the presidential ballot?
A: For the Democrats, your choices are: Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, John Edwards, Mike Gravel, Dennis J. Kucinich, Barack Obama, and Bill Richardson. And for the GOP: Rudy Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, Alan Keyes, John McCain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Tom Tancredo, and Fred Thompson.
Q: Wait a minute, haven't some of those people already dropped out?
A: Yes. But once the ballot is set it doesn't change. If a candidate tells the Georgia secretary of state in writing that he or she has withdrawn, then signs will be placed in the polling precincts to let voters know the candidate has withdrawn. But the ballot won't change.
