9/11 commemorations in metro Atlanta

Here are some of the events in the Metro Atlanta area to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
• Roswell: 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Faces of War Memorial at city hall. The event will feature a color guard, presentation of a wreath by Mayor Jere Wood, a moment of silence and a bagpipe rendition of “Flowers of the Forest.”

• Sign: National book of remembrance
• Newnan: 9 a.m. Thursday the West Court Square. The ceremony will include a 21-gun salute, taps and moment of silence. Speaker will be state Rep. Lynn Smith (R-Newnan). Information, www.newnangov.com.
• Lawrenceville: 9:55 a.m. Thursday at the at the Fallen Heroes monument at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, featuring honor guards from the Gwinnett County police, fire and sheriff’s departments. About 10:30 a.m., members of the Red and Blue Knights Motorcycle Clubs will form a motorcade and ride with police and fire truck escorts to the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, where the state Fallen Heroes memorial is located.
• Atlanta: Georgia Tech students will display 2,977 American flags — one to represent each life that was taken during the 9/11 terrorist attacks — Thursday on Skiles Lawn in the center of the campus. On Thursday, a moment of silence will be observed at 11 a.m. and a remembrance ceremony will be held from 11 a.m. to noon at the Campanile fountain, near the Student Center. Members of the Georgia Tech community will share reflections on 9/11 and how the tragedy affected their lives.
• Cumming: 11:15 a.m. Thursday at Forsyth County’s Liberty Garden, at the Central Park Recreation Center at 2300 Keith Bridge Road in Cumming. Honor guards from the fire and sheriff’s departments will participate. Information, call KFCB at 770-205-4573 or e-mail kfcb@forsythco.com.
• Duluth: Noon at the city amphitheater. Police and firefighters will assist Mayor Nancy Harris in placing a wreath. At noon carillon bells will sound. Information, call Duluth City Hall at 770-476-3434 or 678-475-3506.
• Marietta: Noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, a non-denominational hour of prayer for America will be observed at the Cobb County Civic Center, 548 S. Marietta Parkway. Also in Cobb County, the Trinity Chapel Church of God at 4665 Macland Road, Powder Springs, offers 26 hours of prayer from 10 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Thursday. Both events are open to the public.
• Woodstock: 7 p.m. Thursday, a remembrance ceremony will be held at the Woodstock City Park. Information, 770-517-6788 or 770-560-7802 .
