A big part of Inez Browning’s morning was figuring what jewelry to wear with her outfits. She wore matching earrings, rings and several necklaces all the time. If you complimented an accessory, you might wind up receiving it as a gift, said her daughter, Ann Childers of Snellville.
“If somebody would say, ‘Your rings are pretty,’ she’d say, ‘Honey, take it. I have plenty,’ ” her daughter said. “She was one of those people who had lots of costume jewelry.”
Inez Gregory Browning, 87, of Dacula and formerly of Decatur, died Friday from dementia at her home. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Gwinnett chapel of Wages & Sons Funeral Homes, which is handling arrangements.
For several years, Mrs. Browning was the church secretary for Second Avenue Baptist Church of Decatur. She worked in medical records at Georgia Baptist Hospital, too. Upon retirement, she worked in the pharmacy at the Veterans Administration Hospital.
“She’d say that they had inspections all the time and that she was never off one pill,” her daughter said.
Mrs. Browning was a Southern lady. “Suga” and “honey” colored her language.
Decades ago, she enjoyed shopping at Rich’s and the Mirror, two now-defunct downtown stores that were destinations for Atlantans. She’d take the bus from her home in Decatur into the city, often in search of accessories.
“Jewelry was her hobby,” her daughter said. “She has a lot of granddaughters, so we’ll let them go through it and pick out some things.”
Other survivors include two sons, Dan Browning of Cherry Log and Greg Browning of Birmingham; a sister, Ann Rary of Marietta; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
