Man wounded in Johns Creek shootout dies

A Johns Creek man wounded in a shootout with an off-duty Atlanta cop and Johns Creek police officers has died, police said.

Gregory Wayne Keith, 56, was pronounced dead at Emory Johns Creek Hospital.

The incident began about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday when the Atlanta cop heard gunfire outside his home on Abbotts Station Drive, in the Abbotts Station subdivision. The officer reported Keith was firing a handgun and appeared to be under the influence.

Identifying himself, the APD officer ordered Keith to drop his weapon, police said. Gunshots were exchanged and Keith was hit, police said.

Johns Creek officers arrived during the exchange and one of them fired at Keith, too.

According to the incident report, Keith was wounded in his chest, abdomen and thigh.

Police released no further information.
