Sandy Springs is preparing a response plan for natural and man-made hazards, which, according to city research, happen more often than people might expect.
The “hazard mitigation plan” is aimed at reducing or eliminating risks to human life and property. It will identify planning priorities for the city and pinpoint the most likely problems. The report will require approval from state and federal emergency management officials, as well as city leaders.
According to city research, windstorms are the most frequent natural hazard in Sandy Springs, with 66 storms over the past decade, including five tornadoes.
Severe winter storms, including ice storms, are also common, with 15 storms since 1998.
Among other potential problems, a panel of city and public safety officials working on the plan also have identified hazardous materials releases, flooding, extreme heat, drought, a helicopter crash and earthquakes.
