The five-year-old, who authorities said was burned over 39 percent of her body, was later flown to a burn unit at Doctor's Hospital in Augusta.

Her condition was not immediately known Thursday. But her father, identified as Harry Ray Spitz, 47, of Gainesville, and her 8-year-old sister, were treated for minor burns and released, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. Multiple charges have been filed against the driver suspected of causing the crash.

According to Ron Tomblin, an investigator with the sheriff's office, Spitz and his two daughters were eastbound on Dawsonville Highway about 7:55 p.m. and had stopped to turn left on Dogwood Path.

A 2003 Ford Explorer, driven by a man identified as Elezar Alvarez, 21, of Crystal Cove Trail, rear-ended Spitz's

1998 Chevrolet Geo Tracker, causing the vehicle to burst into flames, authorities said.

A Dawson County EMS ambulance unit drove up on the wreck just as it happened, Tomblin said. The EMTs were able to get the Spitzs out of their burning vehicle.

Tomblin said Alvarez was not injured and tried to flee the scene. But he only made it about 1,200 feet before his SUV stopped.

Alvarez was arrested at the scene on charges of felony hit and run, reckless driving, serious injury by vehicle, following too close and driving with a suspended license.

Tomblin said Alvarez's driver's license had been suspended because of a previous DUI conviction. The suspect was only supposed to be driving to and from work, the investigator said.

Alvarez was released from jail early Wednesday on a $9,735 bond.
