After more than a year in the works, Suwanee’s new City Hall is about to get some foot traffic. Residents for the first time can step inside the new civic hub Monday, with a grand opening in late March. Here’s a look at the art deco-style building, a vast departure from many of the classic-style city headquarters in Gwinnett County.
THE BASICS
- Size: 23,600 square feet
- Construction costs: $7.2 million
- Location: 330 Town Center Ave., Suwanee
- Materials: Aluminum, brick, glass, marble, pre-cast concrete and steel
- What about old City Hall? Police department will take over the entire building.
THE TIMELINE
- Monday: The city opens for business at the new City Hall.
- Tuesday: The City Council meets in its new chambers, which seats 150 people.
- March 28: The grand opening, marked with a ribbon-cutting, tours and a community photo shot from above, likely by helicopter.
THE FUN FACTS
- Building’s exterior looks like marble and stone, but it’s actually a marble veneer that’s about a quarter of an inch thick and lighter than plywood.
- Building contains about 42,000 bricks.
- Building is on track to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified. It would be the second public facility in Gwinnett County to obtain such certification.
- Building has 87 windows, including a 47-foot arched window wall at top.
- The finial at the top of the clock tower rises about 90 feet above Town Center Park.
