Teachers, returning students and administrators working with children also should consider keeping their shots current. Some doctors recommend that patients seek booster shots for certain infectious diseases because the protection provided by childhood immunizations can wear off with age.
In recent years, cases of tuberculosis and pertussis "whooping cough" were suspected at Gwinnett Schools. A Duluth Middle student was diagnosed in 2006 with bacterial meningitis, a rare life-threatening illness. All three diseases can be prevented by vaccines.
THE EXPERT: Vernon Goins, public information officer for the East Metro Health District, recommends that students and adults keep their shots and check-ups current. Vision, dental and hearing screenings help notify parents of problems that could affect their children's studies. "It will give parents the opportunity to start remedial action ... in areas that would affect a child's ability to concentrate and learn," Goins said. The following Gwinnett County public health clinics will have extended hours to accommodate the back-to-school rush:
• The Gwinnett County Public Health Services building at 455 Grayson Highway is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Information: 770-339-4283.
• The Norcross Health Center at 5030 Georgia Belle Court will be normal hours this week and will open from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday for immunizations and screenings. 770-638-5700.
• The Buford Health Center at 2755 Sawnee Ave. will be open from 8 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. today. 770-614-2401.
*Screenings and shots are offered on a sliding fee scale for low-income families. Appointments are not necessary.
