Lilburn police are seeking the driver of a car that struck and killed a man Tuesday night and then sped away.

Ricky James Cleveland was killed when he tried to cross five lanes of Lawrenceville Highway south of Beaver Ruin Road, according to a police report. The driver of a brown Nissan tried to brake his car but slammed into Cleveland, who went hurtling several yards.

The driver, described as a 5-foot tall, middle-aged Asian man with black hair and a mustache, exited the car and approached Cleveland but, according to four witnesses, did not aid Cleveland before climbing back into the car and dashing off.

Emergency personnel arrived at 10:34 p.m., eight minutes after the accident was reported, and could not revive Cleveland, said Detective Matthew Lake, public information officer for Lilburn police.

Among the callers to 911 were the victim's girlfriend, who saw the collision unfold from a curb 15 feet away, Lake said.

According to the police report, a witness had crossed the highway ahead of Cleveland and upon reaching the opposite curb, saw he was in danger from an oncoming car. "Stop!" she yelled, but Cleveland responded, "I got it," and tried to run across the road.

Lilburn police are seeking information about the driver, who, if apprehended, would be charged with vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render aid, Lake said.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the Lilburn Police Department at 770-921-2211.
