A 17-year-old male from Duluth drowned Friday while swimming in Lake Lanier, Forsyth County sheriff's officials said.

Rescuers from the Forsyth County Fire Department dive team recovered the teen's body shortly after 3 p.m., said sheriff's spokeswoman Karleen Chalker.

Officials believed the drowning was the first this summer at the lake.

The teen was with his uncle and three friends at Little Ridge Park when they waded into water about 15 feet deep, Chalker said. "They didn't realize he was in trouble until he didn't surface," she said.

The youth, a native of Guatemala, was pronounced dead at the scene, Chalker said. The victim's name was not released because his next of kin had not yet been notified Friday evening.

Chalker said investigators believed the drowning was accidental and alcohol was not a factor.
