Gas station's low prices stop drivers in their tracks

The first time Josh Kongionlis saw the price of gas at the Marathon station on Peachtree Industrial in Buford, he did a 180.

"It was like $3.50 a gallon," said Kongionlis, an electrician from Sugar Hill who drives a gas-guzzling van. "I couldn't believe it. But now I come here all the time, and my boss appreciates it."

Vehicles of all sorts routinely crowd the Marathon station, jockeying for places in line. The price of gas changes throughout the day, said customer Fredia Christoper. Recently, it has ranged from $3.49 to $3.83 for regular unleaded, with a few stops in between.

"I come by here regularly," said Joey Rodgers, senior pastor at Buford First Baptist, who lives nearby. "They're just beating the pants off everybody. If you get gas anywhere else on Peachtree Industrial, you're paying a lot more."

Formerly a Citgo, the station reopened under Marathon's banner a few weeks ago, said employee Carmen Matos. She said that every couple of hours throughout the day, her boss calls her to change the price of gas.

She also said he didn't want to talk about his pricing system.

The nearby gas stations are taking notice. Abdul Alam, who works at the Texaco station at Friendship Road and Peachtree Industrial, said their gasoline is better than what is found at Marathon. Monday afternoon, Texaco regular was selling for $3.89 a gallon.

"But they are affecting our sales," Alam said. "They are taking customers. I don't know how they can do these things and price so low."

At the Chevron Station at Shadburn Ferry Road and Buford Dam, Dick Freud said he's selling gas from $3.85 to $3.89, "because of the competition. I want to sell some gas."

Don Furlong, division manager for the Norcross/Peachtree Corners office of AAA, said his organization tallies the average price of gas in Georgia and across the country. It doesn't list the price at individual gas stations.

"Maybe the owner thinks he will build a customer base," Furlong said. "I don't know."

Gas prices being what they are, though — $4 on average — Buford may be a tad bit out of the way for most metro Atlanta drivers looking for a deal on fuel.

To find cheap gas throughout metro Atlanta, you might visit www.atlantagasprices.com, where commuters report the price of gas they encounter on their daily drives. In Georgia, you've got 26,654 registered users for the site, said co-founder Jason Toews, who's based in a Minneapolis suburb.

"With gas so high, we're getting a lot of traffic on the website," Toews said. "Especially when gas prices are so volatile, we get a lot of new members."

In Georgia, that volatility has translated into 2,530 new members in the past month.
