The professor at a osteopathic medical college in Suwanee accused of downloading child pornography says he was the person who went to administrators after finding offensive material on a school-issued laptop.

"I know what I did and didn't do. I am innocent of this nonsense," said Peter Alan Rogers, an associate professor of anatomy at the Georgia campus of the Philadelphia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Rogers, 59, of Buford, said he has been suspended from his job with pay while prosecution is pending. He was arrested Monday on one count of possession of child pornography and released the following day on $11,100 bond.

A Gwinnett police report states that a computer forensics consultant was examining a laptop computer belonging to the college last month when he found temporary Internet files containing child pornography.

Rogers, however, says he discovered the offensive material while preparing for a class last month. He claims he immediately reported the discovery to the college.

"There was no effort to hide," Rogers said. "As soon as I realized there was something wrong, I turned this immediately over to the authorities and cooperated fully with everything."

Gwinnett police spokesman officer David Schiralli said Thursday that investigators charged Rogers with the offense because he was the sole user of the computer.

Rogers, a French Canadian who earned his doctorate in cellular and microbiology at the University of Michigan, acknowledged the computer was new when it was assigned to him last year. However, Rogers said he sometimes left the laptop at school and that others have used it.

Rogers said that accusations have been "devastating" to his career and personal life.

"I've worked all my life, I've raised three daughters and I've never been involved in this type of bloody nonsense," Rogers said. "This will be resolved."

The Suwanee campus of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine at 625 Old Peachtree Road offers doctoral degrees in osteopathic medicine. The college also offers a certificate and master's program in biomedical sciences. A total of about 130 students are accepted to the college each year.

Osteopathic medicine emphasizes overall health and the relation among the body's nerves, muscles, bones, and organs, according to the Web site WebMD.
