How do you feel about plans for Gwinnett County to build a new baseball stadium near Buford? Are you excited about the Richmond Braves becoming the Gwinnett Braves? AJC Gwinnett Opinions asked readers who are members of the online Voice of Gwinnett panel. The question was: What is your opinion on the Gwinnett Braves and the county's plan for a stadium? It was asked in late February. Here's what they said:
36%: I'm excited about both and glad our county leaders worked to get them.
18%: I'm excited about both but don't like the way it was handled.
23%: I don't really care one way or the other.
10%: I do not want the team or the stadium.
8%: Other
5%: Don't know
1%: No answer
Note: Percentages do not total 100% because of rounding
"I think it will be great for the county."
JOE GILKEY, Lawrenceville
"I don't want to pay for the team or their stadium. I didn't ask for it and shouldn't be forced to pay for it."
PEGGY MONGRUE, Duluth
"This matter should have been presented to the public before such a heavy investment in taxpayer money. How successful a team will be with the Braves so close will be very interesting. I hope our tax bill does not go up for this, including sales tax."
OSCAR SCOTT III, Duluth
"Minor-league baseball is a lot of fun. It will be more easily accessible and less expensive than going downtown to the Braves. Because of this, we will go more often."
KATY NARDI, Duluth
"As I think I've mentioned, I do like professional baseball, and I don't like to drive downtown. MARTA and Gwinnett Area Transit never worked out an arrangement last year (too bad, I think). Hopefully, Gwinnett Area Transit will run lines to the new stadium. If not, I can drive it but would rather take a bus."
MARY OSBURN, Duluth
"I think we could be better served in many other areas than trying for the prestige of a sports team."
MICHAEL CLIPP, Lilburn
"Too much traffic, though there will probably be jobs, so that is a good thing for the county. I think the expense and inconvenience will outweigh the benefits."
SUE HORN, Lawrenceville
"The taxpayers should have had a say in how their money is being spent. I support the stadium, but it should have been handled better."
GAIL LEADINGHAM, Lilburn
"I'm not a baseball person."
APRIL COLEMAN, Loganville
"Semi-pro teams are more exciting than the majors, and the cost is lower. It'll bring in revenue for the county —- a no-brainer."
ROBERT BERLON, Buford
"I don't think that there was enough solicitation of the taxpayers' opinions. It should have been put up for a vote since I'm helping to fund it. 'If you build it, they will come' only works in the movies!"
GLENN HOWELL, Lawrenceville
"Hopefully, sports will become more affordable with the AAA Braves. It costs a small fortune to go to a Braves game at Turner Field. To get to Turner Field and home takes major planning, lots of money and about a full day to negotiate. The Gwinnett Arena is great for the Gladiators, like the Thrashers at Philips Arena, but the noise levels inside with the speakers and type of music played are deafening, too loud and nauseating."
RON COBB, Lilburn
Gwinnett's becoming a "city" in its own right, and this just makes sense. I do wish they had tried a little harder to put it in the southern part of the county, like the Gwinnett Village. Too much of the county's focus is on the northern cities and not enough on the southern, older areas.
JENNIFER WEWERS, Duluth
"I'm not a sports fan and don't need the traffic hassles. It's a waste of time and money. I'm done with secrecy and political grandstanding. It's a waste of resources, too."
LOU NELSON, Stone Mountain
"I think it's a good acquisition and we can afford the stadium, but I'm not really into baseball."
R. WAYNE CARMAN, Lawrenceville
"Getting the new baseball stadium and farm team here is great. I look forward to being able to go to a good ballgame without having to endure the trip to downtown Atlanta. I love it, great job on getting them here!"
ROBERT BOLTON, Lawrenceville
ABOUT VOICE OF GWINNETT
Voice of Gwinnett is an online panel of readers who volunteer to answer questions on local issues. This questionnaire was answered in February by 153 Gwinnett residents. Although it reflects the opinions of many in Gwinnett, Voice of Gwinnett is not considered scientific because the sample is not random. Surveys are instituted and analyzed by Marketing Workshop Inc. in Norcross. To sign up for Voice of Gwinnett, go to ajc.com and sign up for Voice of Atlanta.
