Founders of a charter school for girls being planned for the Norcross area in 2008 will share their ideas with parents and educators Friday.
The community seminar on Ivy Preparatory Academy will be at 7 p.m. in the main auditorium at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Gwinnett Drive, in Lawrenceville.
Ivy Prep will target girls from the Meadowcreek cluster, a diverse group of neighborhood schools that includes parts of Norcross and Lilburn.
Organizers are proposing to open Ivy Prep as a middle school that will eventually grow into a high school. The school will require girls to wear uniforms and spend more time in class tackling a rigorous curriculum. School hours will run from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Ivy Prep will submit a charter school application formally to the Gwinnett Board of Education in May. The charter school also must win approval from the state Department of Education before it can open.
Upon approval, the school will accept sixth graders (students who are currently in fourth grade now). It will add more grades as those students get promoted, said founder Nina Gilbert.
Cleanup day planned
Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful invites you to the Great Neighborhood Cleanup from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday.
Parents and children age 12 and up can volunteer to pick up trash, paint over graffiti or plant flowers. The target area in Norcross is along Mitchell Road. Volunteers also are needed to clean up Oakland Road in Lawrenceville.
To register for the event or for more information, visit www.gwinnettcb.org or call 770-822-5187. Groups also can participate.
