Man dies in DeKalb police shooting

An unidentified man was shot and killed Monday evening by a DeKalb County police officer responding to a domestic violence call.

DeKalb Police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said the officer arrived at the Park at Covington apartment complex, located off Covington Highway, around 9:15 p.m.

“He [the officer] heard screams from a female and a child and forced his way inside,” Parish said

The man was armed with a knife and assaulted the officer, Parish said. He responded by shooting the man, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

The officer was immediately placed on paid administrative leave, as is customary in such cases, Parish said. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and DeKalb district attorney will coordinate investigations to determine whether lethal force was warranted.
