Field to be named after late Scottdale leader

The late Clyde Aikens will be memorialized Saturday by DeKalb County officials for his longtime advocacy of the county’s unincorporated Scottdale community.

DeKalb Chief Executive Officer Burrell Ellis and county commissioners will dedicate Clyde Aikens Field at Hamilton Park, located at 400 Glendale Rd. in Scottdale. The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Aikens, a quadriplegic, championed Scottdale from 1980 until his death in 2004. He served as president of both the Scottdale Community Planning Council’s Board of Directors and the Concerned Citizens of Scottdale. He was also active with the Scottdale Youth Athletic Association, the DeKalb Advocacy Board and the citizens advisory board for the county Parks and Recreation department.
