A Columbia High School sophomore who allegedly brought a gun to school last week has been arrested and charged with obstruction after he fled the school Wednesday morning.

Police spokesperson Mekka Parish said the 17-year-old student turned himself into police shortly after he ran when confronted by a school resource officer. The officer approached the student after another student told school officials that the boy had had a gun on campus last week.

School officials locked down the campus while DeKalb police searched for the boy on school grounds and in the area around the school on Columbia Drive near Decatur. The boy turned himself in after his mother called police and told them he would surrender.

The boy did not have a gun when he turned himself in, police said, and the school resource officer did not see a gun before the boy fled.

Police also briefly detained five other boys at the school who they believe had been text-messaging the student while he was eluding police.
