DeKalb County residents who haul their Christmas trees to the landfill to be recycled next week will get a dogwood sapling for their efforts.

Keep DeKalb Beautiful and the county sanitation division are joining forces for the “Bring one for the chipper” program, which runs from Jan. 5 to Jan. 9.

Residents who recycle their trees at the Seminole Road Landfill will receive the small seedling, while the discarded trees will be chipped into mulch for public beautification projects or used for wildlife habitat. The mulch also is free to DeKalb residents.

Residents with county pick-up can also leave their trees out for curbside pick up, though the county expects 10,000 trees to be recycled.

The landfill, at 4203 Clevemont Road in Ellenwood, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
