Fake cops sought in DeKalb home invasion

DeKalb County police Tuesday were investigating an early-morning break-in at a home in Ellenwood by men masquerading as law enforcement officers.
The victim told investigators that the suspects flashed badges and claimed to be “special agents” when they entered the home in the 3900 block of Day Trail North and immediately demanded money, DeKalb police spokeswoman Bettina Durant said.
She said the victim reported that he was briefly kidnapped but was able to escape and go to a neighbor’s house to call 911.
The DeKalb police SWAT team surrounded the house, in a neighborhood off Flakes Mill Road, but found that the suspects had fled with an undetermined amount of money.
Durant did not know the exact number of suspects being sought and had no description of the intruders.
She said that while investigators had not determined why the home was targeted, “this is not a random act.”
The victim, whose name was not released, was not injured.
