With five days left to meet their goal, organizers of a recall effort against Lithonia Mayor Joyce McKibben needed at least 32 more signatures as of Thursday morning.

Organizers need 330 registered voters from the November 2007 election to sign their petition to force a special election to remove McKibben from the post. They have until Monday to gather the names.

Recall organizer Ric Dodd has been checking signatures against a list of registered voters from the ballot that elected McKibben but said he plans to seek additional signatures anyway, in case elections officials throw some out.

Dodd challenged McKibben's residency when she ran for office last year but failed to have her name removed from the ballot. McKibben has been living with her mother, who lives within the city limits, but court records show her Harmony Lakes Circle home is in foreclosure. An auction of the four-bedroom home, which she bought in 1998 for $123,000, is scheduled for October.

McKibben has been locked in a power struggle with the city council since April when she tried to fire the police chief.

Recall organizers say McKibben has embarrassed the city, restricted access to public records and refused to sign business licenses. McKibben has said her opponents target her because she uncovered financial irregularities in the south DeKalb County city.
