Marietta mom charged after son drowns in bathtub

A Marietta woman is in jail on charges she left her 14-month-old son unattended in the bathtub, causing him to drown.

Tabitha Scranton placed her 14-month-old and 2-year-old in the bathtub at the family’s home at 265 Aviation Court early Wednesday, Marietta Police spokeswoman Officer Gwen Lewis said.

The 21-year-old mother then left the two children alone to play in the tub, police said.

The 14-month-old was discovered unconscious in the water shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday.

The baby boy was rushed to Kennestone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The 2-year-old girl was not injured, police said.

The 2-year-old is now in protective custody with the Department of Family and Children’s Services.

Scranton was charged with cruelty to children. She is being held in the Cobb County jail on a $50,000 bond.

The drowning remains under investigation by Marietta Police.
