After trying to run over an officer with his car, an Atlanta man allegedly led police on a chase through two counties Sunday night before he was arrested.
Harold Melvin Merkerson, ran 13 traffic lights and five stop signs in Cobb and Fulton counties while attempting to flee from Austell officers, according to his arrest warrant.
After being asked to get out of his 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo about 9 p.m., Merkerson refused and sped away. Racing out of a parking lot on Veteran’s Memorial Highway, Merkerson’s speed hit 90 mph through residential streets, police said.
The chased ended about 15 minutes later when spike strips were deployed and a police car bumped the Monte Carlo, turning it. Merkerson jumped out of the passenger-side window of the car before he was handcuffed, police said.
Merkerson, 49, who license had previously been suspended five times, faces various charges related to the incident. He is also accused of driving on the wrong side of the road.
He remains in the Cobb County jail on $50,000 bond.
