Monday, October 06, 2008

A 3-year-old kidnapped by his teenage mother was found unharmed Monday night, but police are still looking for the mother.

Marietta police say Carla Martin, 16, left her son, Michel Jesus Martin-Mejia, in the playground of the Las Colinas Apartments on Franklin Road and called her stepfather to pick up the child. A warrant for her arrest on kidnapping charges has been issued. Police say Martin took the boy from his baby-sitter’s residence in the same apartment complex at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

Police were still looking for Martin at 8 p.m. Monday. Her son is home with his grandfather.

“She has no custody or rights to the child,” said Marietta Police spokesman Mark Bishop. “The mother has got possible gang ties and may be armed.”

Detectives believe the mother lives in Gwinnett County and expect that’s where she might have headed after dropping off her son.

Martin is a Hispanic woman, 5-foot-3 inches tall and weighing 147 pounds. She has a tattoo on her neck. She was last seen wearing a black jacket, blue gym shorts, red socks, black shoes and gold bracelet with the name “Michel.”

If she is spotted, members of the public are asked to not approach her, but to call 911. Anyone having information is asked to contact Marietta police detective Paula Cowell at 770-794-2363 or 770-605-9445.
