Baskin, 66, faces two counts of aggravated assault. He was in court Wednesday for a probable cause hearing on the charges.

Cox found probable cause and sent the case to Cobb Superior Court.

Police charged Baskin with stabbing Frank Sposato in the apartment they shared and Kathleen McCloud, a neighbor who interrupted the attack, on May 21.

Most of the residents in the Summerhill complex on Austell Road are 55 or older. The apartments are five-bedroom suites that share a kitchen and living room.

Baskin, who is hard of hearing, had to be moved closer to the witness stand so he could hear a police officer's testimony. With his wrists in shackles around his waist, Baskin's head turned from side to side as he listened to the questions and answers.

Cobb police Officer Chris Twiggs testified that investigators found a bloody scene at Summerhill.

Sposato was stabbed 17 times in the upper back, chest and right leg. Sposato managed to make it down the stairs of his second-floor apartment.

When police arrived, he was lying in the first-floor breezeway.

Twiggs testified Sposato, 63, was in intensive care for several days. He has moved into the assisted living section of Summerhill.

"He still doesn't know why Mr. Baskin stabbed him," Twiggs testified.

McCloud was stabbed once in the arm and has some nerve damage.

Twiggs said McCloud told police she heard shouts coming out of the apartment the morning of the attack. When she went inside, she saw Sposato on the kitchen floor and Baskin standing over him.

McCloud approached. Baskin turned around and she saw he "had a large kitchen knife. [Baskin] raised it above his head and tried to stab her."

Her left hand "was sliced by the knife," Twiggs testified.

Both McCloud and Baskin called 911. Police found Baskin inside the apartment. He did not resist arrest, but he asked for a lawyer when police tried to question him.

Police found a bloody 10-inch knife on a coffee table in the living room.

Twiggs said Summerhill residents told police that Sposato "is the nicest guy you ever want to meet. Mr. Baskin is a mean man. That's pretty much the consensus of all the neighbors."
