Successful changes in California and New York state schools will be highlighted during the program on modern childhood nutrition.
On the plate will be childhood obesity, food additives and the role parents, school board and administrators play in school food programs. Students will tell their own stories, including Pebblebrook High sophomore, Chandler Converse, an activist on childhood obesity. They'll also hear from a Sope Creek fourth-grader who has started a petition at his school to add a salad and sandwich bar in the cafteria.
Nutritionist Diane Harris, a Mount Bethel parent, will talk about the importance of fruit and vegetable intake while an East Side parent will discuss food additives.
Attendees will also hear from Cobb's director of food and nutrition services Cynthia Downs. Representatives from state Superintendent Kathy Cox's office, local state legislators and local school board members are expected.
Parents from several elementary schools in east Cobb including Mount Bethel, Sope Creek and East Side are organizing the school food focus.
